DOSH PLAYS STRIPPED DOWN ON RADIO NOIR
Right before his upcoming CD release gauntlet Dosh dropped by our studio to perform a rare stripped down performance on Radio Noir.
The loop genius was armed with only a few pedals, a single keyboard, and a stolen road sign (don't ask us where we got it). The light rig forced Dosh to get creative with his percussion loops, and it left plenty of room for spontaneity.
There hasn't been a Dosh show formatted quite like this one. It did have the familiar chordal swells that provide the groundwork for his trademark melodic arpeggiations, but this performance was sparse. The sparsity yielded intensity, and it will surely have you itching to hear the rest of the album.
Artists like Dosh only come around once in a generation. He isn't just a songwriter. He is a sound architect, and the Twin Cities are lucky to be the home of such an inventive mind.

HAWKS AND OXEN SHAKES THE FOUNDATION ON RADIO NOIR
Last night a tiny city was built in our studio. Vintage amps were the architecture, and pedal boards were its city streets. The sights were certainly intriguing, but the sounds were unforgettable. Words need to be invented in order to describe the music of Hawks and Oxen. A few adjectives could be thrown around, but the sheer amount of modifiers required for a halfway decent description would cause search engines to melt.
The set functioned as one piece of music in three movements. It was a patchwork quilt of seemingly infinite tones and acrobatic rhythms. Themes soared into the air only to plummet back to Earth and shatter, but before any smoke could clear the thematic fragments would take a flight of their own.

This band mixes more genres than this review mixes metaphors. Let there be no mistake about it, Hawks and Oxen was loud as hell, and we enjoyed every second of it.
FIRE IN THE ASYLUM PERFORMS DESPITE ALL ODDS
Radio Noir has always been recorded live and uncut, and out of all the episodes we have done, this one might have been the most raw. It is quite possibly the most realistic depiction of a hard working independent band ever documented. We might be getting ahead of ourselves with that statement, but perhaps not. After all, there is a lot we can't show on camera.Touring isn't always glamorous. Fire in the Asylum drove five hours to play on our airwaves, only to get lost and have their van break down in the middle of a Wendy's parking lot. In order to make this podcast happen, we drove to said parking lot and gave them a jump. Rest assured the California trio was not enjoying the Minnesota cold. Touring isn't always glamorous.
Some of comments on this podcast will either offend you, or have you begging to hear more. Fire in the Asylum is not afraid to wear their politics or opinions on their sleeve. The discussion topics ranged from life on the road to the Federal Reserve, and there was never a dull moment.
This band has a fire in their gut, and that gusto is apparent in their music. All antics aside, the music is the most important thing. They borrow elements from punk, metal, and rock to form a sonic stew that's thick and full bodied. Every last ounce of energy they possess is put into these performances.

Fire in the Asylum' van broke down. We went to the Wendy's parking lot they were marooned in, and gave their van a jump. The show will be recorded live, but it would end up being broadcasted so late it might be past everyone's bedtime.

DADA TRASH COLLAGE PREVIEWS NEW MATERIAL ON RADIO NOIR
Last night a disembodied tabletop stacked with intimidating looking electronics came through our door. It was carried in by both members of Bear Ears, which is another project that Billy Freed lends his prolific talents toward. It started off with a brief conversation about the latest Dada Trash Collage effort produced by Scott Colburn. The duo literally worked, ate, and slept at the Colburn household while recording their forthcoming LP and the recent Rain War EP. More of those details can be heard in the podcast.
Once all of the gadgets appeared to be in working order, Freed launched into a nonstop set of unreleased Dada material. This music is like watching a math equation dance. Every song weaves through a series of programmed but catchy beats, that eventually lead to a momentous climax showcasing a struggle between calculated thought and raw emotion. Heavy planning goes into these works, but they never lose the spark of spontaneity.
DADA TRASH COLLAGE PERFORMS THIS SUNDAY
After their recording sessions with Animal Collective producer Scott Colburn, Dada Trash Collage will be featured on this week's Radio Noir.
The duo just dropped their Rain War EP, and plans to release a full length at the end of April. Tune in tomorrow at 8pm to hear a few selections from both.
